Rummy Nose Tetras

Rummy-nose Tetras are a small, peaceful South American schooling fish (best kept in groups of 8–12+). It’s famous for its bright red “nose” and black-and-white banded tail; the intensity of the red coloration is often used by hobbyists as a quick indicator of stress or water-quality issues.

• Adult size: ~1.5–2 inches (4–5 cm)
• Temperament: Very peaceful; excellent community fish
• Lifespan: Commonly ~3–5+ years with good care
• Behavior: Active midwater swimmer; tight schooling when comfortable

Care basics

• Tank size: 20+ gallons recommended (larger is better for a big school)
• Water: Soft, slightly acidic is ideal; stable, clean water is important
• Temperature: Warm tropical range (often kept around 76–82°F / 24–28°C)
• Diet: Omnivore—quality flakes/micro-pellets plus frozen/live foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms) for best color and condition

Compatibility

• Best with other calm species (small Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, small peaceful Gouramis).
• Avoid fin-nippers and larger predatory fish.
