The Kamfa Flowerhorn is one of the most iconic and sought-after strains in the Flowerhorn hobby. Known for its large, rounded nuchal hump (kok), sunken or white eyes, and fan-shaped tail, the Kamfa carries a bold, commanding presence that sets it apart from other Flowerhorn varieties. Its body is adorned with vivid pearling, rich base colors ranging from gold to red, and striking black markings that give each fish a truly one-of-a-kind appearance.

Kamfas are highly intelligent and personable — they recognize their keepers, respond to movement outside the tank, and develop strong individual personalities over time. Owning a Kamfa is less like keeping a fish and more like keeping a pet.

Care Guide

Tank Requirements

• Minimum tank size: 75 gallons (single specimen); 125+ gallons for tankmates
• Tank setup: Bare bottom or smooth large-grain substrate; minimal décor to protect the kok and allow free movement
• Filtration: High-capacity canister or sump filter — Flowerhorns produce heavy bioload
• Lighting: Moderate lighting enhances pearl and color development

• pH: 7.0–8.0
• Hardness: 8–20 dGH
• Ammonia / Nitrite: 0 ppm at all times
• Nitrate: Keep below 20 ppm with 25–30% weekly water changes

Diet

• High-quality Flowerhorn pellets with color-enhancing ingredients (astaxanthin, spirulina)
• Supplement with frozen or live foods: bloodworms, krill, and earthworms to promote kok growth and color intensity
• Feed 2–3 times daily; remove uneaten food within a few minutes
• Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality

Compatibility

• Best kept as a solo specimen — Kamfas are aggressive and highly territorial
• If tankmates are desired, choose large, robust fish (e.g., large plecos, Oscars) in a spacious, well-divided tank
• Never house with small, slow, or passive fish
• Always monitor behavior closely when introducing any tankmate
