German Blue Ram Cichlids

German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi) is a small, brightly colored South American dwarf cichlid prized for its electric blue “spangling,” peaceful (for a cichlid) personality, and pair-bonding behavior.

Identification/appearance

• Size: typically 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) as adults.
• Body: compact, oval body with a golden-tan base covered in iridescent blue speckles.
• Markings: a distinct black vertical bar through the eye and a dark spot mid-body (often overlaid with blue sparkles).
• Fins: tall dorsal fin with darker leading rays; tail usually clear to lightly patterned.
• Sex differences:
  • Females often show a pink to reddish belly (especially when mature/ready to spawn) and may have more blue in the black flank spot.
  • Males are usually a bit larger with more extended dorsal/anal fin tips.

Temperament & behavior

• Generally peaceful and shy; can be mildly territorial when breeding.
• Best kept as a bonded pair or in a calm community with non-aggressive tankmates.
• Noted for interesting behaviors: pairing, cleaning a spawning site, and guarding eggs/fry.
